What Is the Bible?

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

You may have wondered what makes the Bible special. It is a book from God. It isn’t like any other book you can read. Other books have the thoughts and ideas of people, but the Bible is God’s own Word. Every single word in the Bible is true.

The Bible is one way God tells us what He wants us to know. The Bible says it “ . . . is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible tells what God is like. It shows you what you are doing wrong, and how God can take care of those things. The Bible will train you to live in the way God says is right.

Do people ever call you by other names? Your name might be Robert, but you may be called Bob or Robbie. The Bible is sometimes called by different names, too. It may be called “God’s Word” or “Holy Bible.” That is because it comes from our perfect, holy God. The Bible is also called the “Scripture,” which means writing. Even though it is called by other names, it is still God’s book, His message to us.

What are some ways the Bible can help you?

You can pray:

Dear God, thank You for giving us the Bible. Help me to use it to learn more about how you want me to live. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
