Heaven: for Kids
Based on the book by Randy Alcorn
1. Do I really need to think about Heaven? John 14:1-3 and 2 Peter 3:13. Suppose you were moving to a new place or taking a long trip to a far-away place. List things you want to find out about that place before you go. In order to look forward to it, you need to know about it. Looking forward to Heaven is even better! By learning about Heaven you can spend your whole life looking forward to it!
2. Is Heaven a real place? Isaiah 65:17 and Revelation chapter 21. Think about a special place where you have been and try to describe it to someone who has never been there. You will probably compare it to other familiar places, saying, “It was like…” or “It reminds me of…” Find all the comparisons in this chapter (clue: look for words like “as” and “like”) Do you believe Heaven is a real place?
3. How can we know what Heaven is like? I Corinthians 2:6-16. According to these verses, how has God made it possible for us to know things about Heaven? We won’t know everything about Heaven until we get there, but the new things will be good surprises.
4. Will we have real bodies in Heaven? John 20:11-29 and Luke 24:39 and Philippians 3:20-21. What was Jesus’ body like after He resurrected from the dead? What does the Bible say our bodies will be like?
5. Can we be sure we’ll go to Heaven instead of Hell? Romans 3:21-5, Ephesians 2:8 & 9, Hebrews 2:14-15 How would you answer this question using these verses? Write out your answer. Practise it with a sibling or friend.
6. What does it mean to store up treasure in Heaven? Matthew 6:19 & 20, I Corinthians 3:11-15. Do you have a bank account? If so, you make ‘deposits’. Some things in this life can be ‘deposits’ and last into our next life in Heaven. The more treasures you have in Heaven, the more you’ll look forward to going there! List some of The more treasures you have in Heaven, the more you’ll look forward to going there! List some of your deposits in Heaven.
7. What happens to us the second after we die? Luke 23:39-43. Philippians 1:20-23, 2 Corinthians 5:7-9. These verses speak about what Heaven is like now… the present Heaven. When we die our bodies are buried in the grave, but what happens to our souls and spirits?
8. Where exactly is Heaven? Is it ‘up’? Genesis 28:10-13, Acts 1:9-11 and 6:7-10 and 7:54-60; we don’t know exactly where Heaven is. It may be part of our own universe or in a different one. Wherever it is, Jesus is there, along with Jesus-believers who have already died.
9. Do people in Heaven remember life on Earth? Revelation 6:9-11 and Luke 16:99-31; There are probably some memories you would like to hold on to and some you would like to forget. In Heaven there are some things about our lives here on Earth that we will remember. We will be comforted. Our faithful acts of love and kindness and service for Christ will never be forgotten.
10. Can people in Heaven see or know about what’s happening on Earth? Revelations 6:9-11; Revelation 18:20; Hebrews 12:1. People in Heaven have some idea of what’s going on here on Earth. What will the martyrs remember (Rev. 6)? What did the angel announce (Rev. 18)? Who are you surrounded by (Heb. 12)? Jesus, who is in Heaven, definitely knows what’s going on here!
11. Will we actually see God? Matthew 5:8; Isaiah 6:1-5; Revelation 22:1-4. The more time we spend with God now, the better we’ll know Him. He’s by far the most fascinating person in the universe! Think of questions you’ll want to ask God. Are you getting your list ready?
12. What does eternal life mean? John 3:16; John 11: 17-27, and Psalm 16:11 (KJV). The never-ending life is a promise to everyone who believes in Jesus. Eternal life is more than an existence that never ends. It is a quality life that is filled with joy. Are you looking forward to ‘joy forever’?
13. What is the difference between the present Heaven and the future Heaven? Revelation 21:1-6. The present Heaven is where angels live and where people go as soon as they die. The future Heaven will be the home of God’s people who are now living either on Earth or in the present Heaven. The coolest thing about this is that God will live with us!
14. What about the ‘New Earth’? Ephesians 1:10 and read Revelation 21:1-6 again! ‘Heaven’ is where God makes His home, so the New Earth will also be ‘heaven’. Look forward to living with God on the New Earth. It will be amazing!
15. Is God going to destroy the earth and make a different one from scratch? 2 Peter 3:10, Revelation 21:1. Sounds scary? But if you know Jesus, this will be followed by a fantastic new beginning of an exciting life that will go on forever! While the earth will be destroyed for a while, it will be restored better than it ever was.
16. Will the New Earth be like our Earth was in the beginning? Genesis 2:1-14; Isaiah 51:3. We should expect this New Earth to be like the Garden of Eden, only even better! Every beautiful place on Earth is just a small taste. We can’t even imagine!
17. What will the New Jerusalem be like? Revelation 21:9-27 The New Jerusalem will be the largest city that ever existed – a huge garden city. Make a list of all the features in this city. (In the BRC news there will be more information, so be sure to write in today!)
18. What is the ‘River of Life’? Revelation 22:1-2; John 4:1-15; Pure, clean water…Can you picture people talking and laughing beside this river, sticking their hands and faces down into the water and drinking? Perhaps we’ll travel in gondolas throughout the city like in Venice, Italy! Wow!
19. What is the “Tree of Life”? Genesis 2:9-23; Revelation 2:7 and 22:2; Has there ever been a tree that makes you go, “Whoa”? This tree will give new energy every day, preventing sickness and keeping us well forever. What crop will it bear? Check it out!
20. Will there be ‘time’ on the New Earth? Revelation 6:10-11 and 5:9-13 and 8:1 and 22:2. All the things in these verses take ‘time’. Does the idea of ‘time going on forever’ scare you? Time will always be our friend, never our enemy. We won’t wish that time would slow down or speed up! We won’t be bored and we won’t have to stop doing what we love. Time will always be just right!
21. Will we become angels in Heaven? Matthew 22:23-30; 1 Corinthians 6:1-3; Read these verses carefully… look for that little word ‘like’. We won’t have harps and halos, or sit on clouds. We will be resurrected humans – in charge of angels! How cool will that be!
22. Will we have feelings and express them? Read about feelings Jesus had… John 11:35; Mark 10:4; We were made in God’s image, and have feelings and express them as He does. On Earth our feelings sometimes cause wrong and pain. In Heaven we’ll be free to feel deeply and never be afraid or hurt!
23. Will we have the same identities we have now? Luke 24:36-49; John 20:24-29 and 21:1-10; 1 Corinthians 13:12; Did people recognize Jesus in His resurrected body? Will others recognize us in our resurrected bodies? What do you think?
24. What will our new bodies be like? Revelation 21:4 and 22:1-5; Our awesome new bodies will be better than anything we can imagine! Without the curse, everyone and everything will be beautiful! What about glasses, crutches, wheelchairs, pimples, being embarrassed, braces, etc.?
25. Will we be able to fly and do other great stuff with our new bodies? Luke 24:13-53; Our new bodies will be like Jesus’ body, so maybe we will be able to appear and disappear and ascend and go through walls, OR maybe those were just characteristics of Jesus. We may be able to dive like whales or fly like eagles or run like cheetahs! We’ll have to wait to find out!
26. How old will we be in Heaven? Isaiah 11:6-9; The Bible doesn’t give any definite answers to this question. Possibly Christian parents might get to see their kids grow up in a great neighbourhood, OR maybe we will appear ageless like in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Whatever the answer is, we will look great and feel great!
27. Will we wear clothes in Heaven? Revelation 3:4 and 6:11; In Bible times – when the Bible was written - wearing robes was common for that culture. So perhaps we can imagine ourselves dressed in Heaven the way people in our culture dress on Earth – different cultures, different occasions, different colours. Probably as God’s royal children we will wear a variety of beautiful clothes!
28. Will we eat and drink in Heaven? Luke 14:15-24 and 22:18 and 24:41-43; Matthew 8:11; Revelation 19:9; Jesus’ resurrected body could (and did) eat. We will eat and drink with Jesus at feasts! What will we eat? Use your imagination!
29. Will we ever be tempted to do wrong things in Heaven? Romans 6:23; Matthew 13:41-43; Revelation 21:4; What will be weeded out? Everything that causes sin and all who do evil! Sin will no longer be able to touch us! Wow! Won’t that be wonderful!
